Annual N.S. Genealogy Virtual Conference
Last spring, GANS organized its first Annual Zoom Conference, the "2023 Nova Scotia Genealogy Virtual Conference" , with 12 speakers back-to-back, over a two-day weekend. It was a smorgasbord of lectures, and was widely acclaimed as a tremendous success.
The "2024 Nova Scotia Genealogy Virtual Conference" ran on the weekend of May 4 & 5, 2024, with another great lineup of speakers. The days ran from 9:00am - 4:30pm ADT/Atlantic, with sessions which were 45 minutes along, followed by 10 minutes for questions. Each speaker was recorded, and the recordings are available to registrants for 60 days following the conference. The recordings are eventually available for GANS members, but are embargoed for a year.
The conference is being organized by two GANS volunteers:
- Neal Cody is a Nova Scotian boy and a transcription specialist. He has written numerous articles for our research journal, "The Nova Scotian Genealogist", and is leading a transcription team on a set of small and rare, but highly valuable, datasets. He has been active in genealogy for more than ten years.
- Nathaniel Smith, C.G. (C) has been researching his family history for over 20 years. He obtained the designation of Certified Genealogist (Canada) from the Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes in 2014 and is currently the organization's Registrar. Nathaniel is most well known in Nova Scotia for his award-winning one-place study The Prospect Genealogical Website which showcases the history, genealogy and stories of the people who lived in and around Prospect, Halifax Co., Nova Scotia.
Plans are well-underway for the 2025 Virtual Conference, which we expect to announce at the end of December, 2024. The Virtual Genealogy Conference schedule and registration are handled through a secondary website at www.nsgenconference.ca. The registration price is $69.00, with a discount of $30.00 off if you are a GANS member.
